52 Weeks of Smoothies: Week 1

Welcome to the newest feature for 2013! One of my big lifestyle goals for 2013 is to start clean eating and to make healthy fruit/veggie smoothies every week. Thus, 52 Weeks of Smoothies was born! My mom got a NutriBullet for Christmas, and we've been making smoothies every morning for breakfast. I thought it would be fun to document my year of clean eating by sharing my smoothie combinations every week. I know a lot of people are juicing and making smoothies, so I thought this would be a helpful feature. I'm replacing 1 meal a day with a smoothie, and will share my favorite smoothie from the week here. I'm excited to start creating yummy combos!

For my first week, I decided to go with a tropical smoothie. Can you tell I'm ready for summer? *wink* Here's the ingredients I used:
- 1 1/2 cups freshly washed kale
- 1 Cutie orange
- 3 to 4 baby carrots
- 1/2 large banana
- 1 cup diced frozen mango + pineapple
- 3 to 4 tablespoons slivered raw almonds
- 1 tablespoon whole flax seed
- 1 to 1 1/2 cups spring water
- 1 squirt of liquid Stevia (for sweetness, depending on your taste)

I'm incredibly excited to take control of my health starting this year. I'm making small lifestyle changes that are "doable", and I feel completely inspired. This is a year for change and growth...and smaller hips! xo, Mandy

  2. I would be hungry if I was replacing a meal by a smoothie :s
I have veeery slo-o-owly (but regularly and without re-gaining) lost 27 pounds this past year by reducing food portions, sugar, "bad" fat, completely banning ready-made food and starting hula-hooping (which is quite fun ;)

I'm agreeing on the "small steps" theory though!

  10. it's funny, last year i went through a smoothie/juicing phase and I used a ton of kale. I really thought I loved it. I decided to make a fancy salad with raw kale and pomegranate seeds and stuff; hated it. Kale is great to drink, but i won't be eating it again for quite a while.

  17. This is such a fun idea! I especially love tropical anything so I best this tastes great! And it's primal so I can eat it, but I'll probably just skip the sweetener, I don't crave sweets as much anymore. Some of my favorite smoothies are from Mark's Daily Apple. I've started to eat a primal diet and I feel so much better. I'm a bit overweight and after about a week I've started to feel more energetic, had less digestion problems and best of all my mood is up. I have a real problem with anxiety, especially social and I know a lot of it is b/c of how I ate. This has made a noticeable difference.
